Knowles (1975)定義自主學習為一個過程，由學習者主動分析他們的學習需要，策劃學習目標，辨析學習資源、選取合適的學習策略及評估他們的學習成果。
Williamson (2007) 認為不論是常規，還是非常規的學習，「自主學習(self-direction)」是所有學習的根本。自主學習可以視為學習過程(學習者為學習過程的主要負責人)，亦可以視為學習者的個人特質及性格 (Brockett & Hiemstra, 1991; Caffarella, 1993; Merriam, Caffarella, & Baumgartner, 2007)。
在教學層面，自主學習被認為是裝備學生以應付學習和工作需要的一種必要的終生和職業技能。自主學習具有二個重要的特質：
(i) 學生需要為自己的學習負責任、(ii) 自主學習或者教與學過程中，學習者通常會與教師及其他學習者交流(Brockett & Hiemstra, 1991)。
學習者需要為自己的學習負責任，包括為主導自己的學習、訂定學習目標、為自己的想法和行動負責(Hiemstra & Brockett, 1994)。實際上，在開始學習後，學習者需要不斷地作有關學習的不同的決定 (Banz, 2009; Hiemstra, 1982) 。值得一提的是，學習通常在具教師和其他學習者的社會環境中發生(Hew, & Cheung & Lim, 2013)。換句話說，學習者為自己的學習負責任，但並不代表在學習過程中不包括涉及教師和其他學習者的互動學習 (Banz, 2009) 。
自主學習作為教與學的過渡，包括教師和學習者商討學習目標、學習方法和活動、評估等(Brockett & Hiemstra, 1991)。當中亦包括與其他學習者互動，以達致對課題有更深入的了解及學習興趣(Banz, 2009)。
